Wings (1927) – the First ‘Best Picture’ Academy Award Winner
*Wings* (1927) is a landmark silent film directed by William A. Wellman and starring Clara Bow, one of the biggest icons of the Jazz Age. Set during World War I, the film follows two young American men, Jack and David, who fall in love with the same woman—played by Bow—before heading off to war as fighter pilots.

What sets *Wings* apart is its groundbreaking aerial combat photography. Wellman, himself a former combat pilot, brought a level of realism that had never been seen on screen before. The film used real planes, real pilots, and innovative camera techniques—strapping cameras to aircraft and capturing dynamic dogfight sequences that still feel thrilling nearly a century later.
Clara Bow’s role, while not as central to the war action, adds emotional weight and star power. She embodies the spirited, modern woman of the 1920s, and her performance helps anchor the film’s more human moments amid the spectacle.
*Wings* made history at the very first Academy Awards in 1929, winning the award for Outstanding Picture (now known as Best Picture). It remains the only silent film ever to win Best Picture, securing its place as one of the most important films in cinema history.
